Bundled adware issues

In 2013 the project's hosting site, SourceForge.net, provided the main download of FileZilla with a download wrapper, "offering" additional software for the user to install. Numerous users reported that some of the adware installed without consent, despite declining all install requests, or used deception to obtain the user's "acceptance" to install. Among the reported effects are: web browser being hijacked, with content, start page and search engines being forcibly changed, popup windows, privacy or spying issues, sudden shutdown and restart events possibly leading to loss of current work. Some of the adware was reported to resist removal or restoration of previous settings, or were said to reinstall after a supposed removal. Also, users reported adware programs to download and install more unwanted software, some causing alerts by security suites, for being malware.

The FileZilla webpage offers additional download options without adware installs, but the link to the adware download appears as the primary link, highlighted and marked as "recommended".

As of 2016, FileZilla displays ads (called sponsored updates) when starting the application. These ads appear as part of the "Check for updates" dialog.

In 2018, a further controversy about FileZilla's use of a bundled adware installer caused concern.

Official statement from AccountEdge/Acclivity/Priority Software

AccountEdge is not and will not be Catalina-compliant

We are disappointed to share that we will not be able to offer a Catalina-compliant version of AccountEdge - now or in the future. In the end, AccountEdge’s 30-year-old codebase proved too outdated to establish compatibility with Apple’s newest operating system. In spite of a multi-year project that involved a team of developers and analysts, it’s a project we will not be able to complete.

We recognize the inconvenience this presents to many loyal, long-time AccountEdge Mac users and for that we are truly sorry. Until very recently it has been our earnest intention to deliver you something compliant, new and awesome.

We’ve outlined your options, whether you choose to continue using AccountEdge (including on macOS Catalina) or to evaluate our best-in-class cloud solutions where we can, of course, help to convert your AccountEdge data.

AccountEdge Options

DON'T UPGRADE TO CATALINA

We will continue to update AccountEdge for those that continue to use AccountEdge on your Mac. We’ll deliver payroll tax updates and upgrades for years to come and we will be proactive in communicating our plans. In fact, AccountEdge 2020 is now available.

ACCOUNTEDGE HOSTED (NEW)

We recently launched a hosted, subscription service that allows you to access your AccountEdge company file from any Mac or Windows environment, including Catalina.

Learn More

USE PARALLELS

You can run macOS Catalina and continue to use AccountEdge for Mac within a Parallels virtual machine environment. And, again, we will continue to update AccountEdge for years to come with payroll tax updates and upgrades.

AccountEdge for Windows

We will continue to develop, support and enhance AccountEdge for Windows, which is not impacted by macOS compatibility issues. Should it be convenient for you to use AccountEdge in a Windows environment, we will convert your Mac licenses (at no charge) to Windows.

Options Beyond AccountEdge

If you will be investigating new software to manage your business, our best-in-class Priority family of products are used to run over 9,000 organizations worldwide.

Priority Zoom

Robust, cloud software that delivers scalable performance for companies of all sizes for $50/user/mo (promo code: AEMAC for 50% off the first six months).

Priority ERP

If you are outgrowing AccountEdge, our powerful, yet flexible, ERP software allows you to manage large amounts of data and customize the software based on your business needs. Available both in the cloud and on-premises.

We very much appreciate your loyalty over the years and, in many cases, decades. We are a company that owes its success to word of mouth referrals from its customers and, for that, we thank you.

AccountEdge and Mac OS Catalina (64-bit) Updates

IMPORTANT: MAC OS CATALINA COMPATIBILITY STATEMENT

Updated: November 8th, 2019

At this time, AccountEdge remains a 32-bit app. MacOS 10.14 Mojave is the last version of macOS that supports AccountEdge. If you want or need to upgrade to macOS Catalina, which supports only 64-bit apps, please refer to our October 9 update for options. A decade long project for Apple, this is a complete revamp of AccountEdge as well, and one in which we have invested years of effort. We still do not have a reliable release date at this time, and unfortunately we do not anticipate a release before the end of the year. We will continue to update this page as our work progresses.

Updated: October 9, 2019

We do not have an update and we still strongly encourage you to delay your upgrade to macOS Catalina until we have released a compatible version of AccountEdge. We have, however, posted options in case you cannot wait and need to (or already have) upgraded your OS to Catalina, including how to install and use Parallels to use AccountEdge in a macOS environment on your Catalina machine. We recognize these are workarounds and not ideal long-term solutions - we will continue to focus our efforts on a Catalina-compatible version.

Updated: October 7, 2019

Today, Apple released macOS 10.15, Catalina. This optional upgrade only supports 64-bit applications and the current version of AccountEdge is not 64-bit. We have been working on our macOS Catalina compatibility project ever since Apple made their developer roadmap public. As we’ve announced previously, we will not have this version ready for Catalina's release.

Updated: September 11, 2019

Apple has announced that they will release Catalina sometime in October. We still do not expect to have our Catalina-compatible AccountEdge upgrade ready in time for that release. We continue to work around the clock to deliver this massive rewrite and will provide more details on our expected delivery date when we have them. Until then, we strongly advise you to delay upgrading to Catalina. Again, AccountEdge will not run on Apple’s Catalina operating system. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience.

Updated: July 22nd, 2019

As our developers continue to work non-stop on AccountEdge compatibility with macOS Catalina, we now recognize it is possible we will not meet the deadline. You must not upgrade to Catalina until we have released the new version of AccountEdge. Please check back to this page for updates. We will also send an email (to your email address on file) when we have a definitive release date. We know how important this is to your business and we’re doing everything in our power to get this done. Thank you for your patience.

Updated: June 3th, 2019

Apple announced today that a developer beta version of their new 64-bit macOS Catalina is available to registered developers, with a possible release in the fall. Apple plans to make a public beta available later in the summer.

As noted by macosrumors.com: “As with all new betas, you're not going to want to install macOS Catalina on a primary machine as it is early release software and could have major bugs.”

Please be aware that this new version of the operating system only supports 64-bit applications, and that AccountEdge is currently a 32-bit application. Therefore, AccountEdge will not work on Apple’s 64-bit macOS.

Again, if you install the beta version of the new macOS 10.15, AccountEdge will not be able to run. If you’re intending to run AccountEdge on your Mac, do not install the public or developer preview/betas of the new 64-bit operating system.

We are working towards a new 64-bit upgrade to AccountEdge, and we hope to release in a timely fashion to Apple’s actual release of their operating system. You will receive upgrade notifications. Until then, this is to serve as notification that AccountEdge 2019 and earlier will not work on Apple’s 64-bit macOS.

When running AccountEdge on High Sierra, MacOS 10.13 (or later) you may see a message about AccountEdge not being optimized for your Mac because it's a 32 bit application. As Apple says in the article linked to the message "Yes, you may continue to use 32-bit apps with your Mac today. Using 32-bit software has no adverse effects on your data or your computer.”

While AccountEdge is currently a 32 bit application, we have been hard at work on a 64-bit version.

Apple announced that the next MacOS version (suspected launch date in 2019) will be 64-bit only. We fully expect AccountEdge to be compliant with all future MacOS releases and to be 64-bit in alignment with Apple’s timeline.

As with any new operating system, we recommend you don’t install the next version of MacOS until it is officially released (in other words, don't run beta versions/public preview releases) if AccountEdge is critical to your business. We will share our compatibility statement when we have fully tested AccountEdge against the new, production version of the OS.

You can read Apple's statement on the transition to 64-bit here in this article.
